Coconut oil
Our cold-pressed, extra virgin coconut oil from Sri Lanka is moisturising and rich in skin-protecting antioxidants, including vitamin E, flavonoids and polyphenols. It is also deeply nourishing and protective. It naturally soothes inflammation, allergies and helps prevent infections. We infuse a series of gentle but potent dried herbs in rich, soothing coconut oil in this recipe, whilst limiting the use of pure essential oils, to ensure that it is entirely safe for children over 3 and those with sensitive skin.
Lavender flower
Beyond their beautifully calming scent that relaxes and soothes the nervous system, lavender flowers have antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic and pain relieving properties. This means that they help to reduce tension, pain, spasms and inflammation – including for tired, cramping chest muscles after lots of coughing. Lavender naturally clears phlegm and relieves catarrhal coughs; and as an antimicrobial, it increases resistance to colds, flus and other respiratory tract infections. It does all of this effectively but very gently – it is very safe for children –, and whilst relaxing the mind and elevating the mood. What’s not to like?
Eucalyptus herb and Eucalyptus radiata essential oil
With a refreshing and cleansing aroma, eucalyptus is very effective in loosening and clearing out excessive mucus, decongesting and opening the airways, stimulating the immune response and supporting the body in combatting upper respiratory infections. It soothes any irritation or inflammation in the respiratory tract and eases soreness and discomfort associated with coughs, colds, flus, asthma and chest infections.
Chamomile flower
The golden yellow flowerheads of German chamomile are calming and ease muscle spasms and contraction – they help relax the bronchial tubes and reduce tension, pain and tightness in the chest as may be experienced with asthma or coughs. As it has natural antimicrobial properties, chamomile also aids the body when dealing with infections. It is a mild sedative, meaning that it gently reduces restlessness and anxiety, thereby promoting a restful sleep, which in turn supports recovery. It enhances immunity and reduces inflammation.
Thyme herb
An intensely aromatic Mediterranean herb, thyme is a powerful anti-infective which opens the airways, loosens phlegm and eases its expulsion from the respiratory tract. It is warming, drying and anti-inflammatory, making it a go-to herb for cold, damp upper respiratory conditions: bronchitis, laryngitis or even asthma, for example. Thyme is also a warming stimulant to the circulation – perfect for chilly winter days, or when you need that extra bit of warmth and cosiness!
Calendula herb
Calendula is a gentle but powerful healer, widely used in any external herbal preparations to be applied on the skin. It is a natural antiseptic, so it can help prevent and support the body in dealing with infections, and it is also extremely gentle and soothing on the skin. It supports lymph flow, reduces congestion, enhances immune action and supports the body’s natural elimination of toxins.
Peppermint leaf and essential oil
Peppermint creates a cooling sensation and a painkilling effect when applied on the skin. It is a cough suppressant which decongests your airways and helps you breathe more deeply. Peppermint is also antibacterial and antifungal, helping to support the body in resolving respiratory infections. It can assist with relieving pain and discomfort and muscle and mental relaxation.
Candelilla wax
We use candelilla wax to thicken the balm into just the right consistency for rubbing on the chest. Candellila wax is very similar to beeswax. We avoid using beeswax in order to offer fully vegan balms. It is derived from the candelilla plant, which grows in the Chihuahuan desert in Mexico, providing livelihoods to local smallholder producers (“candelilleros”) who sustainably harvest the plant. Candelilla wax is soothing to the skin, does not block pores (making it safe for oily skin) and is naturally rich in beneficial vitamin A. The plant leaf is so full of wax that you can light it like a candle!
This product contains coconut oil, lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint, chamomile, thyme, calendula, candelilla wax, peppermint essential oil and eucalyptus radiata essential oil.
Rub onto chest as and when required. Suitable for ages 3+. External use only. Do not apply to broken or sensitive skin. Store in a cool and dry place. Keep out of reach of children.
