Bath Salts & Seaweed
All of our bath salts are handmade with Epsom Salt, carefully chosen herbs and intense essential oils. Whether you're looking to ease aches and pains or wind down after a frantic day, these bubbles have got you covered.
In addition to taking herbs internally, you can absolutely absorb medicinal herbs via a bath (or footbath), through the skin. Herbal baths open up the pores of the skin – our largest organ of elimination and assimilation. Herbal bathing is just like immersing yourself in a strong infusion of healing herbal tea. Herbal baths need time to work – at least 40 minutes. We advise making it into a ritual: lighting a candle, sipping some herbal tea, putting a handful of Epsom salts in the water – or our Seaweed bath kit, or any of our herbal bath salts, which contain both dried herbs and infused essential oils. You can either make a strong tea of the herbs you’d like to bathe in and add the infusion to the water, or put the herbs in a muslin cloth (or large reusable tea bag) and tie it around the hot tap. You can use different herbs to create either a relaxing bath (e.g. with lavender) or a stimulating, uplifting one (e.g. with rosemary); or a bath that is soothing (e.g. with marshmallow or lime blossom), decongesting (e.g. with thyme), or good for stress, anxiety or depression.
Bathing in Epsom salts helps relax muscles and relieve pain in your muscles and joints — including in your neck, back and shoulders. The magnesium and sulphate contained in Epsom salt dissolve into warm water and are absorbed into the body through the skin, which helps relieve soreness, tension, stiffness in muscles, as well as easing stress and inflammation.
Bath salts can certainly help relax and relieve sore muscles — Epsom salts in particular, thanks to their magnesium and sulphate content, can be particularly effective in alleviating pain and stiffness in muscles. This effect is even stronger when Epsom salts are combined with the right herbs and essential oils. Zen Maitri’s Joint and Muscle Bath Salts have been designed for an energising and restorative soak after exercise, to ease any stiffness and discomfort in muscles and joints.
Bath salts, herbs and essential oils can be very effective in helping muscle recovery after intense workouts. Zen Maitri’s Joint and Muscle Bath Salts, in addition to Epsom salts, brings together frankincense, meadowsweet, ginger, peppermint essential oil, rosemary essential oil and lavender essential oil to ease pain, stiffness and tension, promote a healthy circulation to joints and muscles and support physical and mental relaxation to support a smooth and healthy muscle recovery from strenuous exercise.
Shortly after birth, it is important to be careful about the herbs and essential oils that you use and keep near your baby, as their sensitivity is particularly heightened — and yours too, especially if you are breastfeeding. Zen Maitri has concocted a serie of especially designed bath herbs, bath salts and bath & body oil for expecting mums and new mums, only using herbal ingredients that are known to be safe to mum and baby and to help ease a range of common concerns through this wonderful, transformational time. They contain nourishing, soothing, calming and restorative ingredients for the skin, promote relaxation and relieve any aches and pains, and help ease any stress, irritation and sleep difficulties.
The New Mother’s Bath Salts, for example, combines healing herbs such as calendula and yarrow, but also lady’s mantle and uva ursi, which support recovery in the pelvic area and the female reproductive system. These bath salts support the healing process, alleviate pain, help prevent infections, ease inflammation and irritation, and relieve spasms and cramps. They also support healthy circulation and gently tone and strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor and uterus.
Bath salts can be very helpful to speed healing, reduce swelling and promote relaxation after giving birth. It is however important to carefully choose the ingredients included in your bath salts as you and your baby will be particularly sensitive at that time. Our New Mother’s Bath Salts, for example, have been thoughtfully and safely crafted with gentle healing herbs and essential oils that promote healing, prevent infections, ease swelling and inflammation and support relaxation — using only ingredients known to be safe to a new mum. It is important not to use bath salts on significantly infected, irritated or wounded skin: please ask for advice from your healthcare practitioner or from a medical herbalist if you are unsure when it is safe to begin using them after birth.
