Honey has been used for healing for thousands of years. It is hydroscopic, which means that it absorbs water-soluble constituents and the volatile oils of plants. Honey has antibacterial, immune-enhancing, anti-allergenic, expectorant and healing properties. It contains pollen which is rich in protein, vitamins, minerals and fatty acids and helpful in the treatment of allergies, hayfever and asthma, as well as propolis, which is a very potent antimicrobial. Being rich in easily digestible sugars, honey is also highly nutritive and energy giving.
Did you know that a teaspoon of local honey taken with every meal can help keep hayfever at bay, thanks to its natural anti-allergenic properties? You can start taking it daily ahead of the season and continue into it.
It is important to buy honey from a trusted local producer to ensure that their practices are ethical, sustainable and respectful of the bees, and that the honey isn’t heavily processed. At Zen Maitri, we are proud to be selling wonderful local honey from Bees & Refugees — for its amazing health properties, deliciousness as well as for the wider social and environmental impact of the project.
Bees & Refugees are an environmental conservation organisation that is working to provide training and introduce beekeeping as a craft and therapy to refugee communities in London, whilst supporting the UK’s native black bee population to flourish.
This honey comes from their apiary at Askew Crescent, which is ten minutes away from our apothecary in Chiswick, London. It is one of the very best honeys we have ever tried: it is 100% pure raw, cold extracted and barely filtered to offer everything good the bees make. The honey is not filtered from pollen or propolis — so it is full of their goodness!
Bees & Refugees only take 10-15% of the honey the bees make, and they only take honey from strong hives, to make sure that bees are happy and cared for. The honey is made by the endangered native black bees that are rare in the UK.
